    LEGENDARY WEST GENESEE COACHES RETIRE

    from press release

The 2018 high school lacrosse season is over, and so is the career of the most successful lacrosse coach at any level, Mike Messere. After 43 seasons at the helm of the West Genesee Wildcats, the Coach has decided to leave the sidelines to spend more time with his family.  Alongside Coach Messere for many seasons as his assistant coach, Bob Deegan has also decided to follow the Coach into the record books.

Coach Messere has been recognized by many in the lacrosse world as the greatest coach of all time. His influence has crossed generations from the early years in the 70’s of establishing the “West Genny” mentality of hard- nosed fundamental play right on through the 2018 season. The success of the program is unparalleled at every level.  The ultimate compliment to his success is the development of lacrosse programs across the USA by West Genny alumni in the areas where lacrosse was previously never played using the same fundamentals that were instilled in them when they were Wildcats. Today, lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in America and Coach Messere’s influence is one of the of the reasons why the sport has grown so rapidly.

Coach Deegan has been a staple on the sidelines for most of Messere’s 43 years, and while he may have been in the background, his defensive schemes derived from scouting the opposition have stymied the best lacrosse players to becoming nothing more than role players in the biggest games.

Coach Messere’s numbers say it all:  846 career wins…24 state championship game appearances.….15 NYS Championships!

On Saturday, July 28 the West Genesee Lacrosse community is honored to present a celebration of Coach Messere’s and Deegan’s legendary careers to be held at the Onondaga Community College SRC Arena.  Information on the celebration can be found at the following website: http://johnpepperlax.com/celebration/

This celebration will be a gathering of not only 43 years of those who were fortunate enough to have played for these legendary Coaches, but for family, friends and anyone who would like to say, “Thank You” to these “Legends of Lacrosse”.
