Philippines Lacrosse Edges No. 6 Scotland, Advances to World Top-10

    from press release

NETANYA, Israel - James Schutt’s five goals paced Philippines lacrosse to a 12-6 victory over No. 6 Scotland, on Thursday, in its sixth game of the 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships. Philippines will now play for a top-10 world ranking,

“As unrealistic as it seemed at the time, Philippines Lacrosse Association (PLA) president Ron Garcia had one goal,” head coach Kirk Ventiquattro said. “That goal was to be ranked top-10 in the world. Well, we achieved that, led by a 23 kids, a great coaching staff, supportive fans and a PLA board who believed in all of us. We did it.”

Seven players combined for Philippines’ 12 scores, including a goal each from Adrian Macalalad, Joseph McKenna, Raymond Medalla, Justin Rodis and Matthew Speciale. Mario Bentiquttro hipped in with two goals and three assists. McKenna and Rodis also had two assists.

On Friday, Philippines will face No. 9 Germany at 6:45 p.m. IDT/11:45 a.m. ET. Fans can tune in live via ESPN+.

The 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships in Netanya, Israel will be the inaugural World Games for Philippines Lacrosse. We look forward to the opportunity to participate in our first FIL World Championship event as well as network with the international lacrosse community and represent the Philippines with honor and pride.

Lacrosse was formally introduced to the Philippines upon meeting with representatives of the Philippine Sport Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee in September 2013. Introductory clinics were held at academic institutions and, from these inaugural clinics, the University of Makati Lacrosse Club, Manila Lacrosse Club and Silliman University Lacrosse Club were formed.

Philippines Lacrosse Association (PLA) became an Associate Member of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) in February 2014. Five months later, the PLA participated in the 2014 World Lacrosse Festival at the FIL World Lacrosse Championships in Denver, Colorado, USA, and was able to raise awareness of our mission to develop and grow lacrosse in the Philippines. Over the next four years, members of the Philippines Lacrosse Association participated in fundraising events and competitions to network and collect equipment donations needed to support growth and provide lacrosse clinics in the Philippines.
